While growing up, I think I was five or six then. My dad gave us an instruction not to switch on any appliances in the house since he was going out. We were meant to read our books or do the house chores. He warned us that very day again before he left.
Just not long after he left, the power suppliers gave us light, we all know the typical anthem Nigerians sing “Up NEPA”. That was what we heard which made us know there was light. My cousin who was staying with us then switched on the light and through the stabilizer we knew the light was on a high current.
She decided to switch on the TV, she said the stabilizer will support the TV since it was on high current. Back then we were using cassette, so she put it in the cassette player to rewind it and then played it. We were watching the film and was so engrossed in it before we heard, ‘gbooooah’. The TV and the light in the whole house went off instantly and we knew we were done for.
We checked other houses to see if there was still light and yes there was. I began to weep because I knew my dad would seriously deal with us.
Fortunately for us, the light came on later before my dad, mum and my other siblings got back but the TV refuse to on. When my dad got back and wanted to watch the NTA news, the TV refused to come up. He knew something had happened and he asked I and my cousin. She said nothing had happened, while I was staring without saying anything. My dad beat the lie out of my cousin that day till she spoke the truth.
There are instructions our heavenly father has given us but when temptation comes it feels as though the instructions are flimsy.
If I and my cousin had obeyed, the TV wouldn’t have spoiled neither would she have been flogged.
Numbers 6:6-9 ,6All the days that he separateth himself unto the LORD he shall come at no dead body. 7He shall not make himself unclean for his father, or for his mother, for his brother, or for his sister, when they die: because the consecration of his God is upon his head. 8All the days of his separation he is holy unto the LORD. 9And if any man die very suddenly by him, and he hath defiled the head of his consecration; then he shall shave his head in the day of his cleansing, on the seventh day shall he shave it.
An instruction has been given to Nazarites, to follow but looking at the life of Samson. He broke the rule. Some people would say, “rules are meant to be broken” ,but can we bear the consequences when it comes.
The same lion Samson killed in Judges 14; could be likened to a temptation which had sweetness in it. Temptations can be very sweet but the end result is always bitter.
Samson sure enjoyed the honey in the carcass, he defiled himself. How many of us are defiling ourselves just because of a few moment of sweetness. How many of us feels an instruction given to us isn’t logical so we won’t do them. Or we feel it is coming from someone beneath us. How many of us have lowered our standard because we feel God isn’t on time so we have to go through the fast route.
Many people defile themselves today just because of a little honey. Its time to go back to our savour and boldly go to the throne of Grace.
God said that a Nazarites was never to touch a dead body, Samson deliberately defiled himself for the sake of the hone. How many Christians today defile themselves just to enjoy little honey in the carcass.
Mortify yourself with fasting, prayer and the word of God so as to stand against the wiles of the devil.
