You cannot give what you don’t have. Yorubas will say “oun ti eye ba je, oun lo ma gbe fo”, meaning what a bird eats, that is what it will use to fly.
I was fifteen/sixteen years of age, I can’t remember the exact age. But I know it was a transition between the two age.
I just joined the choir unit of my church then through the encouragement of one of my aunties. She was like, “Titi why waste this voice when you can use it for God”, so I joined the choir unit.
At that age, there was no song I didn’t know, name it, HipHop, RnB, Juju, Afrobeat. Because I listened to the radio alot and you know music can easily be grasp unlike books.
On one fateful Saturday, as usual I went for choir rehearsals and I was chosen to lead the praise and worship on Sunday. I was quite nervous and I made sure to cram all the gospel songs I know so that I won’t disgrace my village people.
When Sunday came, I got to church early as a worker, we prayed and then it was time to take the praise and worship. I started singing, I would pause for a while before I take the next song.
I sang like three worship songs then I got stuck. I remember vividly that it was one of the RnB songs that I listen to that kept coming to my mind. All the songs I crammed flew away.
I paused for a long time and I was ashamed of myself. It was just the instruments that were playing before I ended it.
I was beating myself, lol, not literally, I learnt all the songs, I crammed it,so what happened? I kept asking myself this. Prior to this time I hardly even read my Bible.
A lot of us have been in this kind of situation. Our hearts and mind which is connected to our souls is like a fertile ground. You plant a corn in that ground and you think it is bread that you will harvest.
I was feeding my heart with alot of secular/non spiritual songs and in my mind of minds I felt just a few hours of cramming will yield something great.
I wasn’t taking the word of God to heart at this period nor was I so keen to listen to gospel song because I felt since we sing in church at all times.
Are you taking the word of God to heart? The word of God is able to transform one’s life.
Joshua 1:8 say ,This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.
Meditating on the word of God comes with some goody bags. Our heart is a receptive ground. What kind of books do you read, what kind of songs do you listen to, what kind of people do you associate with? All these has a great effect on who we are becoming.
Remember change is inevitable and a part of us as humans. It is not too late to start feeding your hearts with great things. Also remember the parable of the sower in Matthew 13:1-23.
The little things we see or listen to and we think we can’t remember are imbedded in that very tiny parts of our subconsciousness. You will be surprised you remember the things you think you don’t.
Keep your heart with all diligence; For out of it are the issues of life. Guard it jealously, even that your eyes is a passage to your soul. Guard it.
