They all entered the hospital and walked down the corridor leading to Shola’s ward. They got to her room and saw that she was covered all from head to toe. ‘Is this heat not too much, why did all those nurses cover Shola up like this’,said Dorothy.
She walked towards the bed and removed the bedsheets from Shola’s face, she stood still and touched her cheeks as though checking her temperature. She touched her nose and felt no breathe, at first her mind went blank.’Tayo come and see your daughter o, is she dramatising for me or what?’, she said as her breath hitched.
Her husband came forward and checked, he sat on the chair and bowed his head and began to weep. Fiyin was already weeping and shouting her sister’s name,’Shola wake up, please Shola, you can’t leave only me here, you know it was the two of us from the start’ Fiyin said weepingly. She climbed the bed as she dragged her hoping the force would wake her up.
Dorothy stood speechless and shocked, she sat on the second chair in the room staring into space.Her mind blank, if this was the kind of pain death caused to people then they lied. They lied about how much their heart ached to see their loved ones, they lied about how their tear glands were flooded and pouring non-stop. She was numb. Tayo and Fiyin began to weep, they wept so bitterly that a nurse came to sympathise with them and told them not to disturb other patients.
Kola came to the hospital and met what happened, he was also shocked but he was more shocked when he saw Dorothy standing and just stare into Space. He came to stand beside her and touch her but she was oblivious of any touch. It was as though all sensitivity was gone from her with everything he did.
‘Tayo, you have to be a man and not weep,you have to look after your wife and kid’, said Kola. He was also sad about what happened but then he couldn’t break down before them. Tayo looked up and tried pacifying his daughter, he went to his wife later but she just stood and stare and not say a word. He sat her down, then Kola suggested they had to call the doctor.
The doctor admitted her and gave her some injections saying she was in shock of her daughter’s death, that she would be alright by the time she woke up.
Dorothy woke up with tears in her, she wept so much that she began to wail. She wept so much that the tears refused to drop anymore,her heart ached. Her husband and Kola spoke to her trying to calm her down. She slept, woke up and began to say ‘thank you Father’ and she wept again.
‘What kind of woman is this’ Kola thought in his mind, she just lost her daughter and she’s still thanking God? Who does that? He shook his head in pity. He believes she and her husband were back together so he won’t be able to woo her again. ‘I am the Lord who formed you from your mother’s womb, I know the beginning from the end, come to me Adekola’ said a Voice.
He was so sure no one in the room had that kind of a voice, had he suddenly gone mad that he would start hearing voices in his head. He shook his head and spoke to his friend the doctor who just entered the room.
He said they could go home and they spoke on the arrangement of how they’d move Shola out of the hospital. Shola,Shola such a loving girl, with the little time he knew the girl, he fell in love with her. He saw a light radiate from within her he couldn’t decipher.
She was always happy all the time he saw her in the hospital despite all she was going through. Now she’s gone, this life is just too short and one had to live it right,he thought.
